Phase three is upon us. Anthony and Joe Russo’s Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters in less than a month, and before the year is up, the studio will unleash its mind-bending 3D spectacle Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson (The Day the Earth Stood Still, Sinister) and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular hero. For those unfamiliar with one of Marvel’s more unique properties, it follows world-renowned neurosurgeon Stephen Strange and his exploration of the mystic arts after a devastating car accident leaves him unable to properly function in his field. While on his journey of healing, he encounters an Ancient One (played by Tilda Swinton), who mentors him in understanding the nuances of magic.
From the looks of things, Marvel is taking on this ambitious title in hopes of creating a story propelled by the use of 3D technology. Where previous Marvel entries have simply used the process as a tool (read: crutch), Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige believes the use of 3D will enhance the narrative. Speaking with Collider, Feige said, “Sometimes 3D is a tool, like it is in Civil War, a tool of – another toy in the sandbox of how the Russos (Joe and Anthony) can present this movie, then there are times like what Disney is putting out with The Jungle Book – it’s certainly gonna be the case with Doctor Strange – that it serves the storytelling, that it advances the storytelling. And hopefully it helps bend people’s minds even more than with just the flat screen.”
And with the official poster that dropped earlier today and the first trailer that premiered during Jimmy Kimmel Live! tonight, it certainly looks as if Marvel is heading into uncharted territory with Doctor Strange. The new clip backs up previous claims that it’ll be Marvel’s Fantasia and a trippy superhero adventure. And in addition to Cumberbatch and Swinton, what’s better than a supporting cast that includes Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelsen?
Doctor Strange is slated to mystify theaters November 4 – in the meantime, check out the trailer debut up top and the official poster down below.
