BET’s forthcoming New Edition biopic may include a new album from the group for the first time in over a decade. In an interview with Billboard, Johnny Gill seemingly announced the news, revealing that he already “put aside songs” for a reunion project.
“We’re gonna try to have the album ready to go by the time the movie’s out, by 2017 when the movie drops,” he said.“I’m making plans to start the recording process with that as well.”
Though the cast hasn’t been picked yet, Gill joked that he’s “disappointed” that Denzel Washington wasn’t available to portray him. “Actually, I just want somebody who can capture the essence of me, and that’s important for all of us in the movie,” he explained.
“That’s going to be the most important thing in telling this story is what these actors capture the essence of who we are,” continued Gill. “We’re hands-on as well. We have to spend time with them. They’re going to spend time with us for a week or two and kinda just get to know us and our personalities and get insight and stuff like that. It’s going to be interesting when it all comes together, but everybody’s gonna get a chance to tell and see what our story’s like. We can’t wait.”
The film will be broken into a three night mini-series following New Edition from their humble beginnings in Boston’s Orchard Projects and “everything in between.”
Bobby Brown is reportedly not involved in the biopic, which is co-produced by longtime New Edition manager, Brooke Payne. Members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ralph Tresvant, and Gill, are co-producers.
