Horror fans and cinephiles at large, boy do we have some excellent news for you. Magnet Releasing (a subsidiary of Magnolia Pictures) and XYZ Films are teaming up to put together a new horror anthology film titled XX. The new venture will feature an all-female roster of directors, including Annie Clark – better known as Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter St. Vincent – who will be making her directorial debut for the film. She’ll join Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation), Jennifer Lynch (Surveillance), and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird), who will all helm their individual segments. Additionally, each segment in XX will boast a cast of female leads.
Annie Clark will not only make her directorial debut for XX, but she’ll be co-writing her segment with Roxanne Benjamin, who previously worked on titles such as Southbound and the V/H/S films. Anyone familiar with Clark’s work under her St. Vincent persona knows the artist’s repertoire is eclectic in creativity and visual presentation. Her innovation afforded her the accolade of being the first woman to win Best Alternative Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards in 20 years.
St. Vincent aside, the three other directors are exceptionally gifted at exploring new themes in horror. Kusama has recently made a lot of noise in the genre with The Invitation, a deeply unnerving suspense film that burns slow and rewards viewers with a stunning payoff. No bullshit, The Invitation has already secured its place in our Top 10 films of 2016.
There’s no word on when XX will arrive, but Magnet Releasing has already unveiled a sweet poster for the film, which can be seen below.
