Nate Parker’s critically acclaimed drama The Birth of a Nation stunned audiences at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film’s debut immediately sparked a massive bidding war, landing one of the biggest deals in Sundance history, with Fox Searchlight Pictures spending $17.5 million to secure Parker’s historical period drama. It also won the coveted Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition following its Sundance premiere. And with the studio setting a timely fall release for the film, an official teaser has made its way online.
I had the privilege of attending a screening for The Birth of a Nation and was completely blown away by Parker’s intensity and committed performance as not only an actor, but as a director, writer, and producer. It stars Parker as Nat Turner, a deeply religious slave in the 1800s who’s put into a position to preach to fellow slaves in order to maintain a level of morale. The Birth of a Nation chronicles Turner’s travels preaching as his master collects a profit, opening Turner’s eyes and igniting a different type of leadership from within. Turner’s internal struggles culminate in the 1831 slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia.
The first teaser, backed by Nina Simone’s “Strange Fruit,” aptly condenses the film’s hefty narrative, offering proper insight into Parker’s vision without giving much away. The Birth of a Nation lands in theaters October 7 and also stars Armie Hammer, Mark Boone Junior, Aja Naomi King, Penelope Ann Miller, Aunjane Ellis, Jackie Earle Haley, Colman Domingo, Dwight Henry, Esther Scott, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Gabrielle Union.
